AEBC: Wrap-up and Review

Today we are concluding our discussions on Last Night in Montreal. Thank you Emily Mandel for joining us this past month. We really enjoyed this book and look forward to The Singer's Gun coming in 2010. For more information about Emily and her books, visit http://www.emilymandel.com/.

Did you miss out on this book and want to know more about it? No worries, here's my review...

This is a beautifully written haunting tale of amnesia, love, obsession, and loss. Lilia, abducted by her non-custodial father at a young age, suffers from partial amnesia and is constantly traveling. Eli, Lilia's boyfriend, follows his lover to Montreal in hopes of uncovering her mysterious past. Christopher, the private investigator hired by Lilia's mother, becomes obsessed with finding Lilia. Michaela, Christopher's daughter, is a troubled soul who connects them all together. They are all searching for one thing--the truth. Was Lilia kidnapped or rescued by her father? Does Lilia love Eli? Why is Christopher obsessed with the case of a missing child? What role does Michaela play in all of this?
Ms. Mandel answers all of these questions and more. Chapters alternate between the four characters who share their respective memories and experiences. The author does a superb job weaving together all of these events to build suspense and intrigue. I could not put this book down! The characters are so real-to-life I felt as though I really knew them and understood their struggles.

Overall, this was an excellent selection to kickoff our book club. Thanks to everyone who participated in the voting process! If you haven't already, be sure to pick up September's book club pick, The Lost Letter by Neil Mulligan.
