Interview, Giveaway, and Review: Author Gale Laure

Today we welcome author Gale Laure to the blog! After reading and reviewing her debut novel, Evolution of A Sad Woman, I wanted to learn more aboout her. She was kind enough to answer my questions, which I have posted below. Today she will be blogging with us, so please feel free to ask your questions! Ms. Laure has also offered to give away a signed copy of her book to a lucky winner! Be sure to leave a comment today in order to be entered in the drawing. Also, include your email address so we can contact the winner. Enjoy!

How did you come up with the title of your book?
Really, it just flashed into my head one night. I believe Kizzy evolves into a sad woman throughout my book and the mystery of her life. She started out as a beautiful, inquisitive, fascinating, innocent child. Life changed her, as life changes many of us.

Keziah Theriot is an unsual name. How did you come up with the name of your main character?
(Smile) "Keziah" is an old name from way back in my family. When I did genealogical research, I found it. I love unusual names. I believe we are unique people. So--thus--our names should be unique.
Kizzy was very unique. She deserved a special name.
"Theriot" is a pretty common name in the Houston area. It is a family name from my husband's side of the family. I just liked the way the two names sounded together. They seemed to capture her essence
.

"Each man has known the same Kizzy, and yet, an entirely different woman" (126). I enjoyed how you developed Kizzy's character through the flashbacks of the five men who knew and loved her. It's true, people change depending on who they are with. How did you manage these multiple point of views?
I suppose I get inside my characters. I wanted to see each Kizzy through each man's eyes. Kizzy is a very complicated character as you will see in the sequels to "Evolution".
Also, I tried to get inside of Kizzy's mind. My writing reflected how she would react to each man, his love, his passion for her, and his personality.

When asked if he believed in angels, Catholic priest C.D. Casmiersky replied,"I believe in life after death. I don't know whether God permits the soul to return to earth. Angels were mentioned in the Bible. I suppose people have unexplainable evidence of angels these days" (148). Do you believe in angels?
Oh yes! I believe an angel or the Lord put this novel in my head. I truly can offer no other explanation for this story. It was just there one day.
However, I try to show that my characters have doubts, feelings and disagreements with each other and within themselves. I believe this makes us human. I strive to make my characters real--human.

Is this novel based on a true story?
It is not a true story. It is fiction. Perhaps my characters are partially true to life. They are compilations of people I have known and people I have observed. I am a people-watcher. I love the human-being with all the frailties and strengths.

Is there a message in "Evolution of a Sad Woman" that you want readers to grasp?
Yes. The reason I write is "the message". The message is that you can survive the most horrible things in your life. You can come out on the other side, sometimes with a beautiful surprise---a fantastic ending or a new beginning. We must have faith and keep hope. From bad can come good!

Do you have a favorite character in this novel?
Kizzy. Of course I love all my characters. But Kizzy is the pivitol force that guides this story. Without her, there would be no story.

How long did it take you to write "Evolution of a Sad Woman"?
Just to write the book---about six months. However, I went to visit my sister out of town. While I was gone, my husband upgraded my computer for me as a surprise. The backup he did of the system was corrupt. The book was lost! I was devastated.
So I sat down and rewrote the novel. Actually it was better the second time.

What was the publishing process like for you? What is the one thing other writers should be prepared for when seeking publication?
Rejection! Lots of rejection. It can hurt tremendously when you know in your heart that your work is worthy of attention and publication. To an author, your work is your child. You created it. You nurtured it. You love it.
But if you truly believe in your work and the people around you support you, you do not give up! Ever!

What has been the best avenue for you in marketing your book?
Reviews! A good review is a great support of your work.
For me--the Internet has played a large part. An author should also join the social networks. You can meet some very nice people, like you. I also recommend a book tour or book signings. This really boosted my sales.
And of course--you need a good Internet marketing person. The man who handles my marketing is tremendous. He handles my website and gets my website hightly ranked within the search engines. But I want to warn people. There are some unscrupulous marketing firms out there. Beware! Do your homework.

What type of feedback have you received from your readers? Can you share with us some of their responses?
One lady told me she cried. I mean--she really cried--a lot! She said she cried with sadness and elation all at the same time. Another lady became very angry when I let something (I don't want to ruin it for future readers) very bad happen to one of the characters. I think you know who I mean. This upset her because she loved the character.
I have never had anyone say they figured out the mystery. They have all been deliciously stumped and fascinated by the ending.
Many responses I have received in foreign languages. I do not know what they are telling me, but they cared enough to write. I find it interesting that they read my novel in English, but write to me in their foreign language.
So many of my readers hound me to get the sequels out. Even one of my editors wanted some clues as to what happens to the characters. I laughed and told him he had to wait.

I love to hear from readers.

What can you tell us about the next novel in the series, "Alana--Evolution of a Woman"?
Ha Ha Ha! You, too, huh! Well, all the characters will be back. Alana is much older, a teenager. She is a handful. After all, she is Kizzy's daughter. She has a boyfriend and girlfriends. There is a serial killer involved, a kidnapping, a stalker and the gold pen is back. Be prepared for the mystery of Kizzy's death to resurface. We are not done with Kizzy yet! Or should I say--she is not done with us!

Gale Laure is a pseudonym. Why did you decide to write under a different name?
I am a very private person. I wish to keep my professional career and my private life separate. I chose this life, not my family. Whatever happens to me in the public eye should not affect them in any way. I will protect them at any cost.

Can you give your readers 5 adjectives that describe you--the writer?
detailed, complicated, curious, romantic, intense

Thanks for answering all my questions, Gale! Now for my review...

“Evolution of a Sad Woman” is as much a story about solving a mystery as it is a story about love. This international selling novel opens with the horrific death of a beautiful, troubled woman named Keziah Theriot. Was her death a result of a robbery turned tragic or was she murdered by a calculated killer? A week before her untimely demise, Kizzy left her will in the hands of Mr. Alexander--a local lawyer she had never met, but felt she could trust. Why? Kizzy left a small fortune to five beneficiaries and asked that they solve the mystery of her death and find her "most prized possession". These five heirs are the men Kizzy truly loved and trusted. William Newton, an attorney from New York, raised Kizzy after her parents’ death. Tom Hastings, a former pro-football player, dated Kizzy in high school. Jimmy Smithson, Houston cabdriver, met Kizzy in Los Angeles while they both pursued acting. Evan Picard, Houston homicide detective, first met Kizzy when he was young and she was his babysitter. Their paths crossed again years later while he attended the police academy and they subsequently dated. Father C.D. Casmiersky, Catholic priest, first met Kizzy in Los Angeles and nurtured her spirituality. These five men, strangers to each other, are united to find the truth. Sharing flashbacks of their time spent with Kizzy, they worked together to solve the mystery surrounding the death of their beloved. The surprising truth behind Kizzy's "prized possession" is revealed in the final chapters and well worth the wait!
The use of multiple viewpoints really strengthened the character development of Keziah Theriot. It's true, people change depending on who they are with. The psychological play between Kizzy and her lovers was very interesting and entertaining.
The author's writing kept me engaged, but at times the structure and word usage were distracting. Transitions of time were the most noticeable interruptions to the fluidity of the writing. "His mind wanders" was the key phrase used to introduce a recollected memory, while "back in the present" returned the reader to the current events. As the story developed, less time was spent in the past and the writing was more engrossing.
Gale Laure did a great job exploring the five W's of any good mystery--who, what when, where, and why. Most of the questions were answered by the end of the novel. The author has promised the few clues left unanswered will be addressed in the sequel, "Alana--Evolution of a Woman". I look forward to reading the next installment in this series.
Overall, "Evolution of a Sad Woman" is an entertaining and enlightening read. I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys mysteries with romance. This book is available in three formats--ebook, Kindle, and trade paperback.

Morning, Gale, I posted a comment a bit ago but don't see it. I hope it didn't get lost. So before I re-do everything from the first I will send this post and see if it works. Maybe I didn't something wrong before.

Okay, we are good to go now. As I said previously,..... Hi Gale,

I really enjoyed reading this interview about you. I think those adjectives are great characteristics to have especially as a writer. I cannot imagine having to re-write the novel again. Here's my question, what was the biggest difference between the first draft and the rewrite? What was your "AH-HA" moment for any momentual changes, if any?

Gale Laure, Author said...

Kate,
The rewrite had several more clues than the original manuscript. The new clues made the story more complicated and challenging. It even added a new character. I also developed the five men a little more. I made them a little more human.
I think my AH-HA moment came when the new clues started popping into my head. I knew then that this new novel would be better than the original. I felt it in my heart.

Ms. Laure, Why oh why did you kill off one of the characters? I loved him.

Gale Laure, Author said...

Oh, I am so sorry. I was trying to establish to you--the reader--how even when a new relationship dies, it affects us and changes us. Unfortunately, death is part of life.
GL

I did get the point.

Anonymous said...

I liked that she killed him. He was not my favorite.

Gale Laure, Author said...

Who was your favorite character?
GL

William. He was the anchor of the group.

Gale Laure, Author said...

You will see more of William in the sequel to "Evolution of a Sad Woman".

Gale Laure, Author said...

Well I am all set, readers. I have my smoothie (lunch) beside me and a smile on my face. I have to keep my strength up. Ha-ha-ha!

Libby said...

We are so glad to have you with us today, Gale! My favorite character (besides Kizzy of course) would have to be C.D. :) Will we be learning more about him in the next book?
I understand you are working on another novel outside of the Kizzy series. Can you tell us more about it?

Gale Laure, Author said...

Hello, Libby. Yes. Father C.D. will be back in the next novel. Of course, he will be a major character. In many ways I believe he is the anchor of the group of men. But there will be more characters show up. These characters will complicate the relationships between the men even more.
The other novel I am working on outside the series is entitled, "The Bunkhouse". It is a mystery, suspense, historical, thriller romance with a sci-fi element added. I wrote it for my husband who loves sci-fi. I have not let him read the manuscript yet. He is waiting anxiously. It involves a golf course, an epidemic, a cowboy gunslinger, a surgeon, two detectives and several female amateur sleuths. Sounds like a mess, huh?

Gale Laure, Author said...

Oh, I forgot to tell you. The characters from "Evolution of a Sad Woman" do make a brief appearance in "The Bunkhouse". They have a mystery of their own.

Anonymous said...

Does the mystery in the bunkhouse that involves the characters in evolution, have anything to do with the sequels that are coming out

Gale Laure, Author said...

Yes. It would be a shame to miss this clue in "The Bunkhouse" to the future mystery resolution in the sequels. I do--in the sequels--briefly discuss what happens to Alana, William, C.D., Evan and Jimmy in "The Bunkhouse". But I think the readers might enjoy experiencing it firsthand. So you might want to read "The Bunkhouse".

Libby said...

"Bunkhouse" sounds great! I am so excited to hear characters from "Evolution of a Sad Woman" will be appearing in "Bunkhouse". I really enjoy it when authors include cameos of characters from their other books.

Gale Laure, Author said...

Thanks, Libby. "The Bunkhouse" takes place in Austin, Texas. They just happen to be in Austin, Texas when something mysterious happens to them.

Anonymous said...

Hello Author Laure, When I read your novel I wondered if Kizzy was you. Is she?

Gale Laure, Author said...

Oh, boy! I have been asked that question several times. I believe every woman would love to be Kizzy (at least some of the time in her life). I believe every man would love to know Kizzy. I believe Kizzy is a part of us all. Hope that answers your question.

Libby said...

This is a post from Anna on our Author Exposure facebook page. My apologies to both Maragaret and Anna who were having trouble posting to the blog today. Here is Anna's comment:
"When I first read about this book, I thought it was a romance and I've read very few that I like. After I read this interview, I've learned that this story is very different and I'm interested. I define those AH-HA moments as when a story "gets a life" and I love it when that happens so now I have two reasons to read the book. One way or another, I will. Good luck book 2. I'll see your name up in big letters someday soon."

Anonymous said...

Hello, Gale, Do you research your novels before you start writing, or do you do it while you are writing? Which is easiest?

Trig said...

Hi Gale,

I find the cover stricking and it draws me in. How did you come up with the title?

Gale Laure, Author said...

I have the story in my head first. Then I research the plausibility of my story. All along while I am putting it down on paper (or in my computer), I research. I have meetings with experts or research at the library. I do some research online. However, I use caution with what I find online. I must verify my sources. I do not use just any source. My stories must be believable for me and to my readers.
I love research. I love finding answers. I suppose that is why I write mystery. So for me--any and all research is easiest, whenever I do it.

Libby said...

Yes, I meant to ask you about the cover...did you design that yourself?

Gale Laure, Author said...

Trig,
The cover is my own design. The title just popped into my head one night. That happens to me a lot. I realized the story I was telling was about a lady (Kizzy) who evolved into a sad woman throughout the story. She did not begin that way. Life forced her down that road.
However, I must warn readers that Kizzy is a very complicated lady. Maybe you do not know her as well as you think. Inthe sequels, readers should be prepared to get to know mysterious Kizzy a little better. If she was a different woman with each man, maybe she is a different woman to each reader! Hmmmm . . . .

Miss Laure:
Why do you write mystery and romance? Why those genres?
Sarah

Gale Laure, Author said...

Sarah,
My books will cover many genres. Even though I write fiction, I think of my books as being like life. Life does not fit into just one genre. My life consists to many things as most lives do. My current novel, "Evolution of a Sad Woman' has been categorized under murder, mystery, suspense, thriller, action, romance, crime, detective and even straight literature.
My next novel, "The Bunkhouse" will add sci-fi and historical to the list of genres.
I do like romance and mystery myself.
Hope I answered your question.

Anonymous said...

Yes, you did.
Thank u,
Sarah

Kizzy is just complicated. Your compassion for her was not misplaced. She will just reveal more about herself to you in the sequels. I think you will enjoy getting to know Kizzy.

Sh-sh-sh! I didn't say that.

Do any of you readers have a thought on who loved Kizzy the most? Why?

Anonymous said...

Evann loved her the most. I think he loved her the longest.

Gale Laure, Author said...

I am sorry, Trig. I overlooked your question. I hope to start my book tours again soon. I am still trying to get my home back in order since it was destroyed during hurricane Ike. I would suggest readers check my website www.galelaure.com often. When it is not being hacked, it is up-to-date. Also, I am on twitter, goodreads, authorsden, facebook, myspace and now, authorexposure.com. I will try to update authorexposure with my sightings. (I assume you have a place for that here). I will be on www.blogtalkradio.com on December 8, 2009 as the guest host of Jo-Anne Vandermeulen.
I have several other things in the works, but not nailed down at this time.

Libby said...

That's an interesting question. I would have to say, of the five men, I think William loved her the most. He had quite a history with her. He knew her parents--having served with Kizzy's dad in the armed forces. He cared for her as a legal guardian after her parents died. She grew up to be a beautiful, charming woman and William fell in love with her. His marriage to Sylvia failed because of his deep love for Kizzy.

Libby said...

That's great you have some more things in the works, please keep us updated.

Gale Laure, Author said...

Julia thinks Evan is the winner. Evan did love her since he was a little boy. But . . .
Good thought, Libby. I tried to make each man love her in a different way. You are right. William had quite a history with Kizzy. He had loved the child Kizzy as well as the woman.

Gale Laure, Author said...

Yes, I will keep everyone updated as to my appearances either on the Internet or in person.

Gale Laure, Author said...

Mystery Book Reader,
The answer is no. It was not until I read my own finished product that I decided to write the first sequel.

Libby said...

That's a great question, Mystery Book Reader! Thanks for joining our discussion.
Gale, you mentioned earlier that this book went through an unexpected complete re-write. The second version had an additional character and, overall, had more characeter development, and more clues. Do you think you would have decided to write a sequel had this re-write not happened? Perhaps this is a case where things happened for a reason :)

Sharliebel said...

Gale Laure, you have shared yourself and your background story in genuine conversation. It's what has influenced my desire to read your book, Evolution of A Sad Woman. Also, my interest is heightened after reading the posted review in Author Exposure.

Gale Laure, Author said...

Libby,
You are right! I, too, believe things happen for a reason. You have no idea how totally devastated I was when it was destroyed. I almost took it as an omen that I should not write. But something inside of me would--or could--not let it go. If the re-write had never happened, I would not have written a better novel to read.

Gale Laure, Author said...

Sharliebel,
It is so good to hear from you. Thank you for your kind words, the follow on twitter and the retweet. Let me know how you enjoy the novel. I look forward to hearing from you.

Gale Laure, Author said...

Dear Murder She Wrote Fan,
I guess I have an eye for detail. I tried to get inside the victim's (Kizzy) head as well as the killer's head. Then I try to be outside, as an on-looker.
Also, I interviewed a police officer for procedure. I wanted to be as accurate as I could. I also have a police procedural reference book I use sometimes.
After all this is put together, voila! I have a murder.

I don't think I read this anywhere, but if I missed it ..please forgive me.

Who is your favorite author? And when you thought about how you would enter this genre, did you struggle to find your niche within this genre?

You are a very inspiring author. I'm very pleased to watch and participate in this dialogue with you.

Gale Laure, Author said...

Trig,
I do have many favorite authors. I suppose the one at the top of my list is Agatha Christie. Her mysteries always challenged my mind. It is not easy to stump me. I drive my husband crazy when I tell him who the killer is when we watch movies together. Others I admire are William Shakespeare, Mark Twain, James Michenor, Sue Grafton, Stephen King, Danielle Steel and many more. I have found that each of these authors offer something so different and so amazing!
I, too, am eager to find new authors and become entrenched in their talent.

No. I think everyone would enjoy my novel. I have had male, female, old, young, all races who have purchased my novels at my book signings. Maybe more women than men have purchased it. I do believe some readers may find it objectionable. It does contain language, violence and sexual situations.

Target Audience: likes to read mystery, suspense, romance and thriller novels.
Hope I answered your question
