31 Hours is a fast paced, frightening, thought-lingering novel told in lyrical prose. Hamilton uses characters of extreme depth and intricate scenes to draw emotion from the reader from one chapter to the next.
Jonas struggles to define himself and the life he knows thus far. With great dispair, he severs from the things that tie him to his family, his childhood, and even the city he knows so well. He heads straight through isolation and into the hands of a group of extremists. His mother, Carol, startles awake one night driven by fear of the realization that her son has become distant and she can't figure out why. Hamilton uses Carol to pull the reader right into gut-wrenching fear of something we all know can be very plausible. Developing a sense of helplessness, Carol can't figure out how all of this is possible but in 31 hours it's all set to come to an end.
I really enjoyed this emotional rollercoaster. The memorable characters and events will linger for quite some time. Hamilton built this story for discussion and it's an ideal choice for book clubs. I highly recommend this to anyone who believes they have learned to expect the unexpected.
