There's not a whole lot out there that I've found in the way of well written books on mental illness. One of the best I've read recently is Chris Bohjalian's The Double Bind. I don't know that it is necessarily taboo, especially as society evolves and more is learned and accepted about the illness. I have bi-polar family members and I think it would have been a whole lot more helpful to read about the subject over the last several years than have to learn all about it on my own through real life experiences and the little I could find on the internet when I first started finding out about it.
