Jade Phoenix: A Fine Piece of Literary Fiction

Jade Phoenix is a stunning debut novel by former US diplomat Syd Goldsmith. This novel has received some well-deserved recognition—it was a finalist for the New Voices in Literature Award and semi-finalist in the William Faulkner competition. It truly is a fine piece of literary fiction.

Jade Phoenix is the captivating tale about three people whose lives randomly intersect during the politically tumultuous times of the 1960s-1970s in Taiwan. Ko-sa Ong, a man crippled in childhood, is a successful businessman who desperately wants a son and a nation. Nick Malter, a man scarred by childhood bullies, seeks comfort in Chinese society and its culture. Jade Phoenix, daughter of a disgraced general, turns to prostitution to earn money for her family. How these characters from very different backgrounds and cultures find each other is all part of this amazing story.

I thought the author’s attention to detail and strong character development made for a very compelling read. It was difficult to put down! I found myself stealing moments throughout the day just to read a few more pages.

My only criticism of this novel is the book cover design. It did not capture my attention and I don’t think it does justice to the story within. An exceptional novel deserves an equally exceptional book cover. Please, don’t judge this book by its cover.

Overall, I would strongly recommend Jade Phoenix to anyone and encourage book clubs to make it a selection. It is a highly discussable book about culture, destiny, betrayal, and love.

A book cover design is often the first thing that catches my attention when I am in the library or bookstore. Interesting how you didn't like this one. I won't judge this book by the cover, though, and am looking forward to reading it.

You're right. You shouldn't judge a book by it's cover. I think it's important to note this in the review to help the author. Most debut authors hope to get the opportunity for a demand of reprint in which case they can update the cover to make the book more marketable.

You are right Pat! I'm very surprised this book hasn't been discovered yet. Syd Goldsmith is truly a remarkable storyteller. I look forward to when this book gets a demand of reprint.
