A reader’s surprise is what I experienced as I read Fragile.

Typically when an author wants to tell a story from the point-of-view of two characters, he alternates narrators between chapters. Chris Katsaropoulos chose to intertwine the lives of the three main characters by beginning the last sentence of a scene in the life of one character and starting a new scene mid-sentence with a different character. Each change in narrative is clearly marked with an indented paragraph. I found this distracting the first two times I read it, but it immediately became a welcome change of literary bliss. The way the author wrote this story was indeed ‘fragile’ for the reader. It’s unique and a style that Katsaropoulos can certainly call his own.

Amelia Geist, a hopeful virgin, has been waiting over fifty years to face her first love, Tris Holloway. As young adults, Tris abandoned Amelia and married someone else years later. Now, Amelia has the opportunity to see him again at their 50th high school class reunion. When Amelia heads to a new hair salon the day before the class reunion, she befriends Holly, a hair stylist and mother of two little girls. The lives of Amelia, Holly, and Tris are suddenly intertwined in an unexpected way.

I recommend this debut novel to fiction readers looking for a brand new experience, rich characters and a great story. Be sure to find a quiet place to read. Yes, it really is that ‘fragile’!
