In this novel, Tess Callahan quickly draws us into the tale of two friends. April and Oliver met and formed a friendship in childhood. April has always been a bit more wild and prone to finding herself in trouble. Oliver, on the other hand, is the more mature and stable type.
Surprisingly, the friendship struck in childhood survives the years despite the very different paths their lives take. Oliver is attending law school and engaged when April's brother (who was often a third in their childhood adventures) is suddenly dead. This sets the stage for April and Oliver to meet up once again.
The characters that Callahan has captured in this book are phenomenal. Two friends who should never have been drawn together find themselves tied to one another with a bond that does not break. The edgy sparring that takes place between them creates an undercurrent of tension.
I really enjoyed this book and finished it in one setting. This has the makings of a fairy tale that is made more believable by the interwoven flaws of reality. I loved the sparks that flew between the lead characters as they fought off feelings that weren't welcome.
I would recommend April & Oliver to those who enjoy mystery mixed with romance. It is suitable for all ages, but adult audiences would probably get more enjoyment from reading it.
